In its quarterly report to the Federal Communications Commission, the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) reported that approximately $1.1 billion in unused funds from previous Funding Years could be used to supplement future requests for E-rate discounts. However, because the report is current as of June 30, 2009, it did not take into account the $900 million the FCC recently rolled into the FY 2009 Funding Year. Based on the FCC’s Third Report and Order, the FCC can direct USAC to apply unused funds increase the amount of available funding for a funding year.
The quarterly report also highlighted the number of potentially fundable applications they have left for each funding year as of June 30, 2009. The SLD has been in contact with these applicants and are reviewing their applications to determine if they will receive a funding commitment. The breakdown is as follows:
- 2002 – 2 potentially fundable applications
- 2003 – 5 potentially fundable applications
- 2004 – 53 potentially fundable applications
- 2005 – 68 potentially fundable applications
- 2006 – 117 potentially fundable applications
