On March 4, 2024, the Federal Communications Commission issued a Public Notice announcing that the last full month of benefit under the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) will be April 2024 due to lack of additional funding from Congress. Starting on December 31, 2021, the ACP provides qualifying households a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband Internet access and a one-time discount of up to $100 for the purchase of a laptop, desktop, or tablet. The monthly Internet benefit increased to $75 per month for households on Tribal lands.
Initially funded with $14.2 billion, ACP provides discounted Internet service for more than 23 million households. Unless additional funding is allocated by Congress, the program will run out of money in May 2024. Eligible households will receive their full benefit in April, and a pro-rated benefit in May. Enrollment in the ACP has been frozen since February 8.
While schools and libraries were not permitted to apply for ACP funding on their own, many districts across the country provided awareness and assistance to student households who lacked adequate connectivity for remote learning.
