FCC Changes broadband definition

Recently, the FCC quadrupled the minimum required download speed for a service to be called ‘broadband’.  Looking at Funding Year 2023, 1,429 applicants had at least one service rated at less than 100Mbps on 1,840 funding requests, totaling over $119.6M.

In the chart below, the counts of detail lines are grouped by the speed reported in the request:

In FY 2023, lines rated below the new 100Mbps standard made up nearly 8% of the overall total number of request detail lines.
