Beyond the Brainstorm: Follow-Through is Key to Success

I love ideas.

One of my favorite things to do, both personally and professionally, is brainstorm. When I need a solution or I want to strategize, I break out a whiteboard or some post-it notes and get to writing. To me, considering options and dreaming up plans is exhilarating. But what happens after the whiteboard is filled and the post-it notes are spread across a wall?

The far less glamorous part of any brainstorm is defining what’s next. Making a to-do list, creating action items, and determining the next steps are essential, but often far less thrilling. Without these, any ground-breaking thoughts discovered in ideation are useless. An idea without follow-through is purely a notion of fiction.

How I Set Up for Success

A concept I’ve used for years now, one which my family often gives me a hard time for, is an IMPACT filter, created by Strategic Coach Dan Sullivan. When approaching anything from a work brainstorming session to a Saturday afternoon of personal projects, it is important to set your expectations and write down what it is what you want to accomplish. I’ve found that when I use the IMPACT filter, I have centered my focus and am spurred to action. It is a clear reminder that without action, I cannot accomplish what I have set out to do.

The Bottom Line

So, whether you’re organizing a family vacation or spearheading a significant project, set yourself up for success. Remind yourself what you want to accomplish, so you don’t get lost in aspirational dreams and ideas.

Prioritize follow-through and I promise you will be proud of what you can do.
