I have 1,115 photos in my camera roll of whiteboards… if this doesn’t tell you how much I love using them, then I don’t know what will!
Using a whiteboard is a powerful tool when brainstorming, making a list, or jotting down my thoughts. Seeing the blank white surface fill up with ideas and otherwise is satisfying and inspiring. But what is it truly about a whiteboard that I find so valuable?
It’s not as much the board itself, but rather, what it facilitates. With a whiteboard, there is creativity, erasing, re-writing, drawing, etc. There is also space to ask one more question, fit in one more word, and add one more line.
Fill your whiteboard to the max
All the possibilities and ingenuity at your fingertips with a blank canvas waiting to be filled, begs to be filled to the max. And by max, I mean push yourself to ask – why? Think about whatever is on your mind from a different perspective. When you think you’ve arrived at your finished list, groundbreaking idea, or otherwise, it’s time to take another look.
Often the best ideas are born from one last question or one different perspective. That’s the difference between a great solution and a fantastic one.
Expand your creativity
Don’t settle for the first thing that comes to mind and sell your creativity short.
Force yourself to leave the genius idea you may have uncovered and consider another avenue. Be your own devil’s advocate. Whether you stick with your first instinct or discover something entirely different, you will have expanded your perspective and grown.
The Bottom Line
When you feel like you’ve accomplished or solved what you set out to do, take one more look, and ask one more question. It never hurts to consider another option, and you may just discover what you set out to find all along.
