Engaging the Genius in the Room: The Leader’s True Role

As leaders, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that we need to have all the answers. People look to us for guidance, and our instinct is to respond with solutions or directives. But what if leadership isn’t about providing answers at all? What if true leadership is about asking the right questions?

Why Questions Matter More Than Answers

Over time, I’ve come to realize that leading well has less to do with having the perfect answer and more to do with posing the perfect question. A good question opens doors. It sparks creativity, invites others to engage, and taps into the collective experience of the group. More often than not, my job isn’t to deliver the solution—it’s to guide a discussion that brings out the best ideas from those around me.

Of course, this isn’t always easy. When the pressure is on, it’s tempting to jump in with answers. But effective leadership means resisting that urge. Our first responsibility is to ask the right questions—questions that encourage thoughtful reflection and collaboration.

Unlock Solutions Through Struggle

One of the most powerful things we can do as leaders is to step back and allow our teams to grapple with ideas. It can be challenging to watch others wrestle with tough decisions, but this is where real growth happens. By giving people the space to explore options, they take ownership of the challenge. They become more invested in finding a solution because it’s no longer about implementing my idea—it’s about discovering the best idea.

Often, the solutions they develop will differ from the ones I might have provided if I had simply given the answer. That’s not just acceptable—it’s actually beneficial. Embracing their unique approaches leads to innovation and fresh perspectives. However, it does take practice to let go of my own preferences and trust in their methods.

Asking questions like, “What do you think is the best approach?” or “How would you tackle this issue?” can unlock ideas that might never have surfaced if I had come in with a ready-made answer. The struggle to find the solution is part of the process, and it often leads to breakthroughs.

The Power of Collective Wisdom

Tapping into the wisdom of the group isn’t about giving up control. It’s about recognizing that the best leaders bring out the strengths of others. When we ask the right questions, we don’t just delegate responsibility—we create an environment where everyone can contribute to the solution.

I like to think of it this way: my role is to be the guide, not the hero. I shine a light on the path, but it’s the team that walks it. And as they do, they grow, learn, and gain confidence in their abilities.

The Right Questions, Not the Right Answers

The next time you’re facing a tough decision, pause before jumping in with the answer. Instead, think about the questions you can ask to engage the wisdom in the room. Trust the people around you—they just might surprise you with solutions and insights you hadn’t considered.

In the end, leadership isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about creating a space where everyone’s brilliance can shine.
