Over 2,700 applicants and $3.7 billion requested for FCC’s Cybersecurity Program

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has received 2,734 applications for its Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program, with funding requests totaling $3.7 billion. Applications came from schools, libraries, and consortia across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia, spanning both rural and urban communities. This broad participation highlights the critical need for cybersecurity resources in educational institutions across diverse environments.

Application Highlights

  • Application Period: September 17, 2024 – November 1, 2024
  • Funding Requests: $3.7 billion
  • Number of Applications: 2,734
  • Geographic Reach: All 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia
  • Next Steps: FCC will review applications and announce selected participants in a future Public Notice

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the growing cybersecurity threats facing schools and libraries and the importance of this pilot program in addressing these challenges and testing solutions across different environments. The program, with up to $200 million for eligible cybersecurity services and equipment, prioritizes neediest schools and libraries, Tribal entities, and a mix of large and small, urban and rural institutions.

From Funds For Learning

“We are encouraged by the number of applicants who have stepped forward to request funding. We believe this is just a fraction of the total need that exists to support schools and libraries in defending their networks. The E-rate Trends Report shows a similar urgency, with 87% of respondents expressing a critical need for cybersecurity funding. We hope the FCC will support as many applications as possible, including considering an increase to the budget cap above $200 million if additional Universal Service funds remain available.”- CEO, John D. Harrington

As schools and libraries confront evolving cybersecurity threats, this pilot program stands as a pivotal opportunity to secure necessary funding and to better understand the scope of cybersecurity needs across educational institutions.
