FCC to Release Proposed E-rate Rulemaking

Earlier this month the FCC released their timeframe for implementing the National Broadband Plan (NBP) and continue to be on target with there “action agenda” for releasing proposed new rules for the E-rate program. The FCC will hold the next open monthly meeting on May 20 and according to the agenda released, the FCC plans to issue an E-rate Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) “‚Ķto make broadband more accessible in schools and libraries, and to cut red tape”. Further details will be available once the NPRM is released next month.

The FCC has already released one NPRM tied to the NBP and to the E-rate program which would allow “‚Ķ members of the general public to use the schools’ Internet access during non-operating hours.” Most stakeholders have been supportive of this proposed new regulation.
