On November 27, 2017 the California State Department of Education requested specific relief from the FCC tied to the schools that were adversely impacted by the series of wildfires in Northern California. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection a total of 8,176 fires have burned over 1 million acres. Several schools were destroyed or severely damaged and many students had to transfer to other schools which put additional financial pressure on those schools’ resources.
The state is asking for a waiver of the September 30, 2017 service delivery deadline, Form 486 deadlines and other payment deadlines, and deadlines tied to filing appeals. The state is also seeking additional category two E-rate support for certain FEMA designated disaster area affected schools.
