Guide Spotlight: Tava Mazak

My name is Tava Mazak, and my journey with Funds For Learning began as an intern during college. It was pure chance that led me to discover a hiring event at my school, and now, I’ve been with the company for nearly six years since graduating. This role has provided me with invaluable experiences that have significantly contributed to my personal growth and confidence. What I cherish most about this job are the people I collaborate with and the profound impact we make on communities across the nation.

What do you find most interesting about working in the E-rate industry?

The E-rate industry is always evolving! There are constant program changes and advocacy opportunities that directly impact student success and their access to the Internet resources they need. Most applicants manage two to three E-rate funding years simultaneously, so as a consultant, I never lack for variety. Every day and season bring a new experience that is dynamic and engaging in a new way.

What has been your favorite moment with a client?

There are some unexpected successes when working in E-rate. For example, as we prepare reimbursement paperwork for clients, we review their invoices. For one client, I noticed their invoicing was vastly different from what was contracted. The applicant sorted this out with their service provider, who confirmed it was just a billing issue. They ended up getting a significant sum of money back, which they might not have noticed otherwise! Moments like these make the work incredibly rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about working in a Guide team?

The E-rate program often presents tricky situations where you might find yourself stuck after trying every avenue you can think of. Being part of a Guide Team allows me to share ideas with other E-rate-savvy colleagues who already understand the clients I work with. This collaborative environment not only challenges me to think more critically when assisting a colleague but also broadens my knowledge as we work together as a team. Additionally, having a team to consult means we can get accurate information and solutions to clients much more quickly, enhancing our service and ensuring clients receive the support they need.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the E-rate industry?

My advice is to pace yourself. It takes about two E-rate cycles for everything to fall into place. If you’re frustrated and still confused after a year, don’t lose hope—you’re right in the thick of it. Additionally, seek out mentorship and collaborate with experienced colleagues. Their insights and support can be invaluable as you navigate the complexities of the program. Remember, patience and perseverance are key, and over time, you’ll become more comfortable and confident in your role.

What is your top tip for E-rate applicants?

When applying for E-rate funding, one of the most crucial things to keep in mind is documentation. During a review or audit, applicants are often asked to demonstrate compliance, and the most efficient way to do this is by maintaining dated and well-organized records. According to the E-rate document retention policy, all documentation must be preserved for 10 years from the last date of service. Therefore, as you navigate the E-rate cycle, organize your documentation with future accessibility in mind. Think about how someone a decade from now will need to retrieve and present this information effectively.
