For the past 15 years, Funds For Learning has been dedicated to gathering invaluable feedback from the E-rate community through our annual E-rate Applicant Survey. This milestone marks a significant achievement in our ongoing mission to support and enhance the E-rate program, which has been instrumental in connecting schools and libraries to affordable telecommunications and internet services.
Reflecting on the history of our survey, several common themes have emerged over the years. Applicants have consistently highlighted the need for simplified application processes, increased funding, and greater flexibility in eligible services. These insights have not only guided our advocacy efforts but have also influenced policy changes that have made the E-rate program more accessible and effective for all participants.
One of the most transformative impacts of our survey has been its role in shaping the evolution of the E-rate program. For instance, feedback from the E-rate community played a crucial part in the introduction of Category Two funding, which provided much-needed support for internal connections and Wi-Fi infrastructure. Additionally, the survey results have underscored the importance of digital equity, leading to initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide in underserved communities.
As we celebrate the release of our 15th survey, we also look ahead to the future. Recent changes in the program, such as the inclusion of Bus Wi-Fi and Hotspot Services, reflect the evolving needs of the E-rate community in a post-pandemic world. These additions, as well as the Cyber Security Pilot, are expected to be a focal point in this year’s survey, as applicants share their experiences and challenges in implementing these new services.
Moreover, national news regarding the Universal Service Fund (USF) and its ongoing review by the Supreme Court may also influence the survey results. The potential implications of these developments on the E-rate program are significant, and we anticipate that our survey will capture the community’s perspectives on these critical issues.
Over the years, the E-rate Applicant Survey has been a cornerstone of our efforts to support and improve the E-rate program. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain committed to listening to the voices of the E-rate community and advocating for the changes that will ensure every student and library has access to the connectivity they need to succeed.
Here’s to 15 years of feedback and many more to come!
